Shown on your provider's quote or receipt, as 1 unit of the sending currency in the receiving currency.

Any fixed fee charged, in the currency you send. Enter 0 if none.

How the calculation works

The markup is the gap between the mid-market rate and the rate you were quoted, as a percentage of the mid-market rate. If the mid-market rate is 1.0850 and you are offered 1.0600, the markup is about 2.3%.

The calculator turns that gap into money: the difference between what your recipient gets and what they would get at the mid-market rate, converted back into the currency you send. Add the fixed fee and you have the total cost per transfer. Multiply by your transfers per month and by 12 for the yearly cost.

Common questions

What is the mid-market rate?
It is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of two currencies on the global market. It is widely used as a neutral reference, but individuals rarely get it exactly, because providers price their service around it.
Why can a "zero fee" transfer still cost money?
A provider can charge no fixed fee and still build its margin into the exchange rate. A weaker rate means your recipient gets less, which is a cost even if it never appears as a fee.
How do I compare providers fairly?
Compare the final amount the recipient gets for the same amount sent, at the same moment. That figure includes both the fee and the exchange rate markup, so it shows the full cost in one number.
How often should I check?
Rates and pricing change, so it is worth checking before a large transfer and reviewing a regular one every few months. Small differences add up when you send money every month.
